Sony Halts 2012 Quad-Core Phone Release

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

Mobile news – Stephen Sneeden, the product marketing manager at Sony Mobile, said during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2012 in Barcelona, Spain that the company is planning not to release quad-core phones until early 2013. He added that an official announcement from Sony will be released once the release of quad-core smartphones is set.

The company has been in a move to match the performance of their mobile phones with the efficiency of battery. It believes that this move would enable them to have strong confidence in joining the quad-core market, which it thinks a very challenging field. It also plans to go to the Cortex A15 architecture, which it hopes to dominate the quad-core architecture.

Sneeden noted that the company is evaluating the performance of their quad-core mobile phones to ensure both quality and performance. Also, the company integrates all demanding mobile apps into its offerings.

Since March 2011, the availability of dual-core smartphones has been in the market. The Xperia S from Sony that features Qualcomm’s 1.5 GHz MSM8260 Snapdragon was just announced recently. It is also expected that Sony Mobile will use the dual Snapdragon 24 chipset of Qualcomm in the second quarter.

As Sony continues its goal to provide excellent phones in the market, the company says it is relying on its core strengths which are the cameras and gaming experiences to have dramatic impact on the preference of the consumers.

Mobile News | Sony is Not Interested in Quad-Core Phones for Now

Monday, March 19th, 2012

Sony Mobile product manager Stephen Sneeden told Mobile News during Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona that the company is unlikely to release a quad-core phone this year. Consumers would have to wait until early 2013, he added. However, Sneeden clarified that this is just his assumption and the company would make an official announcement regarding this matter when it is ready.

He told Mobile News that they will only venture in quad-core phones when they find technology that would not sacrifice battery efficiency over performance. He explained that Sony thinks battery life technology that could handle the fast performance of quad-core is not there yet. He revealed that the company is interested in venturing Cortex A15 architecture in the second half of 2012, which they feel that it is better than recent quad-core platform.

Sneeden said that Sony is still in the process of evaluating the quad-core performance. He noted that Sony will only consider quad-core when quality would not suffer for performance and if demand is really high.

Dual-core smartphones have been available in the market since March 2011 and Sony just recently announced its first dual-core smartphone in February 2012 with the launching of Xperia S operating in Qualcomm’s 1.5 GHZ MSM8260 Snapdragon. Sony is expected to integrate dual-core Snapdragon S4 chipset, also from Qualcomm, in the second quarter.

When asked about PS Vita phone, Sneeden told Mobile News that they will continue to focus its core strengths which are in cameras and gaming experiences and in these strengths Sony Mobile would take advantage.
